Airships: History between Heaven and Earth Military Geographic Institute Conference Firenze, Italy (Apr. 2018) In the prestigious Schmiedt Hall of the Military Geographic Institute in Florence, a historic reference point for Italian geography and cartography since 1872, Max Pinucci presented the Museum Edition of his acclaimed book Airships: Designed for Greatness, the Illustrated History. This event provided an important opportunity to delve into the history of airships, intertwining the themes of cartography and photogrammetry, fields in which the IGM has been a pioneer at the international level, with the technological evolution and design of these extraordinary airships. Organized in collaboration with Hun in the Sun, the event highlighted the multidisciplinary approach that characterizes the work of Pinucci and his team. During the conference, the contents of the volume were presented, combining high-quality illustrations, technical details, and historical narratives to tell the epic story of airships. Additionally, the imminent opening of the large multimedia exhibition Airships | Dirigibili: Ships in the Clouds, scheduled for May 11 in Trieste, was announced, an event that would further enhance the research and outreach efforts of the project. The event at the IGM not only served as an opportunity to celebrate the excellence of design and visual storytelling but also to explore the connection between airships and their applications in mapping and geographical exploration, highlighting the pioneering role of these flying machines in expanding human knowledge. Airships: Journey Between Art and Myth 79rosso. Mostre e residenze artistiche Conference, exhibition Florence, Italy (March 2018) The exhibition “Airships | Ships in the Clouds” by Max Pinucci, inaugurated in March 2018 at the 79rosso art space in Florence, celebrated the extraordinary history and allure of airships, true ships in the clouds. Organized with the support of Hun in the Sun, the exhibition featured 16 large-format panels, scale models, and multimedia materials combining historical images, sounds, and projections. The panels, created using mixed digital techniques, told the story of the technology, design, and performance of these imposing airships, the result of the research and passion of Max Pinucci, designer, professor, and founder of Hun in the Sun. Each piece was born from the in-depth study for the book Airships: Designed for Greatness, an internationally recognized and award-winning volume, sold in 28 countries, that stands as a unique tribute to the history and myth of airships. In the exhibition, alongside the original panels, visitors were able to explore detailed infographics illustrating scales, maps, and technical data, allowing them to understand the proportions and performance of these sky giants. The exhibition offered an immersive journey through the history of airships, from 1900 to the present, intertwining contemporary graphic languages with scientific and educational narratives, in a perfect balance between art and technique. The collaboration between Hun in the Sun and the 79rosso team made it possible to create a unique cultural experience, captivating both aviation history enthusiasts and curious visitors, bringing to the forefront the human dream of conquering the sky. Giants of light | F-Light Florence

San Lorenzo between Sky and Sea Giants of light | F-Light Florence Docu-Show Chiesa di San Lorenzo, Florence, Italy (Dec. 2017 – Jan. 2018) Between December 2017 and January 2018, the F-Light – Florence Light Festival, promoted by the Municipality of Florence and organized by MUS.E under the artistic direction of Sergio Risaliti, illuminated the city with spectacular installations and projections in some of its most iconic locations, from the Ponte Vecchio to the Galileo Museum, from Piazza San Lorenzo to the Chamber of Commerce, and extending to Piazza Santissima Annunziata, the city’s towers, and gates. Hun in the Sun made a significant contribution to the festival with a unique project created in collaboration with the MBVision team and the students of the “Graphic Composition” course at ISIA Florence. A monumental video projection, over 50 meters long, transformed the walls of the historic Church of San Lorenzo into a visual theater that captivated visitors. The theme of the projection combined the imagery of the giants of the sky and the sea, telling the story of airships and whales, symbols of grandeur and mystery. The installation merged art, design, and storytelling, creating a visual dialogue between technology and nature, between the past and the future. This project represented a perfect synthesis of Hun in the Sun‘s innovative approach, capable of transforming historical locations into immersive and contemporary experiences, celebrating the allure of flight and the beauty of nature. Carnival: History and Images Light Parade Video projection Cittadella del Carnevale, Viareggio, Italy (July 2017) In July 2017, the Light Parade in Viareggio transformed the historic hangars of the Cittadella del Carnevale into a vibrant stage of lights and images, telling the centuries-old history of the Viareggio Carnival. The path guided visitors through the most significant milestones of the event, from 1873, the year of the first carnival parade, to 1921, when the first official song “Carnevale a Viareggio,” known as “Su la coppa di Champagne” by Sadun and Maffei, was presented. Hun in the Sun played a key role in enriching this visual journey, bringing its expertise in artistic and visual projections. The images and lights, designed by Hun in the Sun, brought the history of the Carnival to life, intertwining it with that of the city of Viareggio and with national and international historical events, offering a unique and immersive vision of the tradition and evolution of this celebration. The fusion of art, costume, and history was enhanced by the visual installations, which elevated the magic of the Viareggio Carnival to a whole new level, immersing the audience in a journey of lights, colors, and sounds that celebrated the deep connection between the city and its historic event. Le premiazioni si sono svolte presso il Salone F. Baracca della “Casa dell’Aviatore” dell’Aeronautica Militare, a Roma. Biplanes and Airships: Visual Magic Night Flight 4 Docu-show Aeroporto CollinaBorgo San Lorenzo, Florence, Italy (July 2016) July 2016 saw a unique event at the Aviosuperficie Collina, in the heart of the Mugello region, where the Biplano Club Italia organized Biplano Day, an occasion to celebrate the history and allure of historic aviation. Among biplanes, airships, and evocative narratives, the day offered a show that intertwined art, history, and technology in a multisensory story. The centerpiece of the event was the contribution of Max Pinucci, founder of Hun in the Sun, who, together with Gregory Alegi, presented a journey through the history of aviation, inspired by the book Airships: Designed for Greatness. The narrative unfolded through a combination of historical, technical, and artistic images, projected onto the surfaces of the hangar using the innovative visual technologies of Animation Lights Project. Pinucci’s book, which explores the evolution and allure of airships, was at the heart of the exhibition, enriched with historical and technical images projected onto large surfaces. The visual performance was complemented by the dancers of Axe Ballet, directed by Elena Degl’Innocenti, who danced inspired by the movements of airships and biplanes, creating a fusion of art, history, and technology. Thanks to this creative vision and the contribution of all collaborators, Biplano Day became a memorable experience, highlighting the creative work of Hun in the Sun and its approach to visual storytelling, celebrating the grandeur and history of airships. Organized by the Italian Society of Travelers, this festival aimed to celebrate one of the most fascinating and legendary means of transport: the airship. The opening of the event was dedicated to a special conference, curated by Max Pinucci, founder of Hun in the Sun, who provided a unique overview of the history and evolution of airships. Pinucci presented a selection of models and projects, weaving a captivating narrative that spanned across eras, telling the stories of heroes and adventures related to this extraordinary means of transport. The Norge polar crossing Umberto Nobile Museum ConferenzaLauro, Italy (May 2016) On May 14, 2016, the Umberto Nobile Museum in Lauro hosted a conference to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Norge airship’s polar crossing, an epic feat led by Umberto Nobile and Roald Amundsen in 1926. Organized by the “Amici di Umberto Nobile” Club in collaboration with Pro Lauro, the Forum Vallo Lauro 2050, and under the patronage of the Municipality of Lauro, the event retraced one of the greatest adventures in Arctic exploration through scientific and historical contributions. One of the most significant moments was the presentation by Max Pinucci, author of the book Airships: Designed for Greatness. His talk, titled “The Forgotten Century of Airships,” recounted the evolution of these extraordinary flying vessels, highlighting their contributions to exploration, technological progress, and air transport. Conceived by the students of the Master’s program “Museum and the Public” at the LDM/Marist Institute, with the technical coordination of Max Pinucci and the collaboration of the Alinari Foundation, the event transformed the sacred space into a captivating visual experience through the projection of historical images onto the church walls. Hun in the Sun, under Pinucci’s direction, played a central role in the realization of the project, curating the design and narrative of the exhibition, structured into three thematic areas: “From Form to Flight”, exploring the historical and technological development of airships; “First First-Class”, dedicated to the luxury and panoramas offered by flying ships; “Two Faces of Destruction”, recounting their military use and decline. The event was not limited to the exhibition alone but also served as an opportunity to reflect on the cultural and technological impact of airships, thanks to the visionary contribution of Hun in the Sun. With our approach, combining design, storytelling, and innovation, we curated a pivotal moment of the exhibition: a conference that delved deeply into the evolution of airships, featuring presentations by Max Pinucci and Carl-Oscar Lawaczeck. This event went beyond a historical narrative, presenting airships as symbols of progress and sustainability, highlighting the potential of new technologies in the context of air transport and exploration.
